Current Teaching Series: “The Filing of the Holy Spirit”

Main Scripture: Ephesians 5:15-21

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.

Fill – to influence everything you do and think (e.g., love, anger, other emotions or substances)

The fulling of the Holy Spirit is the influence or control that the Holy Spirit exercises over you when you yield yourself to Him.

  • Who is able to be filled?
    • Anyone who is a Christian AND wants to be filled.
    • Examples: Acts 2:1-4, Acts 4:8, Acts 4:31
  • Why do we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit?
    • We need to be Spirit-filled in order to fulfill God’s purposes and will in our lives.
  • How do we get filled with the Holy Spirit?
    • We must be clean and we must be yielded.
      • Be Clean (1 John 1:8-9)
        • The process of being clean:
          • Conviction – allow the Holy Spirit to make you aware of sin
          • Repentance – to turn away from sin
          • Confession – to say the same thing God says about sin (individual sin confession not global sin confession).
          • Forgiveness – when God lifts and removes the burden of sin.
          • Cleansing – When the record of sin is removed or forgotten by God.
        • Romans 6:3-13
        • Galatians 5:1
      • Be yielded
        • Surrendering our control
          • Continually (daily/multiple time in a day)
          • James 4:6-8
        • Renewed Mind
          • Romans 12:1-2
        • Christ-centered
          • We focus attention on Jesus Christ, who He is, how He lived, what He did for us, what He’s doing for us now, and the power we have in His name.
