May 16, 2021 – Confession & Forgiveness in Prayer

Fresh Start Christian Church
Current Teaching Series: “Prayer is Essential”

Main Scripture: Matthew 6:5-7
“And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

Confession & Forgiveness in Prayer – Matthew 6:12,14-15

“Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors”

What is sin?

  • any lack of conformity to God’s law.
      • Doing things we should not do
      • Not doing things we are expected to do

Other words used for sin (missing the mark):

  • Iniquity – lawlessness; direct and open rebellion against God and His will.
  • Transgression – stepping across the line; going beyond the limits prescribed by God.
  • Trespassing – sin of slipping or falling; results more from carelessness than intentional disobedience.

David’s Prayer of Repentance: Psalm 51:1-13

  • Acknowledge your sin
  • When you are saved the Holy Spirit does not leave you.
      • Hebrews 9:22-26
      • 1 John 1:7-9

Types of forgiveness

  • Judicial Forgiveness: occurs at the time of salvation. The penalty of sin was forgiven through Jesus’ death.
  • Parental Forgiveness: forgiveness needed to get a relationship back into right standing.

Process to be cleansed from sin

Step 1: Conviction – the Holy Spirit makes the saved person aware that they have sinned.

Step 2: Repentance – the person changes their mind about the specific sin.

Step 3: Confession – Say in agreement the same thing about sin that God says.

Step 4: Forgiveness – God lifts and removes the heavy load of sin; to hurl it away.

  • Micha 7:19
  • Jeremiah 31:34

Step 5: Cleansing – Sin is no longer there through the blood of Jesus.

Why is forgiveness important?

  • Psalm 66:18
  • Isaiah 59:1-2

Forgiving Others

  • Matthew 6:12,14
  • We are required to forgive others
      • Matthew 18:21-35
      • Forgiveness is a decision not to hold a person or situation hostage to the hurt they caused you.
  • Unilateral Forgiveness: forgiving others without their request for forgiveness.
  • Transactional Forgiveness: reconciliation and restoration with the person who caused the hurt.
  • Ephesians 4:31-32
