March 7, 2021 – Effective Prayer: Part 2

Fresh Start Christian Church
Service Outline – March 7, 2021

Current Teaching Series: “Prayer is Essential”

Main Scripture: Matthew 6:5-7

“And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

Topic: Effective Prayer

Praying According to God’s Will

1 John 5:14-15 – Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

  • Will (Hebrews: thelo) – to wish, to desire, to have, to want, to purpose (Greek diatheka) covenant (God’s promises)
  • “ To pray according to God’s Will means to give up your own plans” ~ Tony Evans
  • Jesus is our example (Matthew 26:36-44)
    • Jesus had His own will, since He was fully God and fully man (John 5:30 & John 6:38) but He prayed for God’s Will to be done.

What is God’s Will?

  • God’s Will is His Word
    • Logos – the written Word
    • Rhema – the spoken Word (e.g. prophecy and preaching)

When prayer is based on what God said then we know He will do it. (Isaiah 55:11)

The written Word provides overarching principles, promises and truths that we can rely on and use in our prayer (Isaiah 43:26)

God’s Word is true (Psalm 119:160, John 17:17)

God’s Promises and Truths:

Victory

  • 1 Corinthians 15:57
  • 2 Corinthians 2:14
  • 2 Corinthians 4:7-10

  • Philippians 4:19
  • Matthew 6:30-33
