March 21, 2021 – Persistence in Prayer

Fresh Start Christian Church
Service Outline – March 21, 2021

Current Teaching Series: “Prayer is Essential”

Main Scripture: Matthew 6:5-7

And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

Topic: Persistence in Prayer

James 5:16 – Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, [b]fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much (NKJV).

James 5:16 – The heartfelt and persistent prayer of a righteous man (believer) can accomplish much [when put into action and made effective by God—it is dynamic and can have tremendous power] (AMP).

  • A certain type of prayer by a certain type of person results in the accomplishment of God’s purpose here on earth. This prayer is dynamic and powerful because it is a prayer that God hears and answers.
  • “The divinely authorized means to access the kingdom of heaven and to get the kingdon to intervene in the affairs of our earthly life.” ~ Tony Evans
  • “Prayer is a mechanism God has decreed for Him to release what He intends. Prayer never makes God do what He hasn’t planned to do, but it can openHis hand to do what He determined He would do.” ~ Tony Evans
  • “Prayer activates the decree and will of God.” ~ Tony Evans

A certain type of prayer: James 5:16b

A certain type of person: Elijah

  • James 5:17
  • 1 Kings 17:1
  • 1 Kings 18:1, 41-45
  • Even when we know God’s Will and God’s Way, we have to do our part and PRAY earnestly, fervently, and expectantly until it comes to pass.

Why do we have to ask/pray to God for what He promised?

  • Because God said so.
  • As we spend time with God it strengthens our relationship with Him and develops our faith.
  • It exercises our authority. As his children we have dominion and authority (Matthew 28:18, Luke 10:19. John 14:13-14)
  • It reminds us that God is sovereign and He is Lord.

“What God says He wants to do doesn’t always happen immediately. Often He waits on our labor to pull it down through prayer.” ~ Tony Evans
