Fresh Start Christian Church
Service Outline – January 31, 2021
Current Teaching Series: “The Filing of the Holy Spirit”
Main Scripture: Ephesians 5:15-21
See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.

- a submissive and teachable spirit toward God that manifests itself in genuine humility, meekness, compassion and consideration toward others.
- Gentleness does not mean “weakness” but instead “strength under control or “gentle strength”
- God is gentle and all powerful (Psalm 18:35)
- Jesus is gentle (Matthew 11:28-30)
- We are called to be gentle, humble and meek as children of God

- Philippians 4:5
- Colossians 3:12-14
- What does gentleness look like?
- How we speak to people, what we say and how we say it. We have to be mindful of our “tone” (Proverbs 15:1)
- Restoring others in gentleness (Galatians 6:1)
- We should not be argumentative we are to be patient and teaching (2 Timothy 2:24-26).
Self-Control
- Greek: egkrateia
- a quality that gives us control over our desires especially those related to the body, temperate, of sound mind.
- God gave us a sound mind. A spirit of self-control (1 Timothy 1:7)
- Too much or unrestrained engagement in anything can be ungodly and demonstrate a lack of self-control which is idolatry. It is overcompensation/symptom for other issues or greater problems.
- Drunkenness (1 Timothy 5:23, Ephesians 5:18)
- Gluttony (Philippians 3:19) excessive greed for food.
- Sexual Desires
- Sin against yourself (1 Corinthians 6:18)
- Sex is not wrong but is ordained in the context of marriage (1Corinthians 7: 1-9)
- Glorify God in your body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
- We must “discipline our body” lest when we evangelize to others we should be considered hypocrites. (1 Corinthians 9:24-27)
