Knowledge, Wisdom, Strength and Joy: Colossians 1:9-12
“filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding” (v.9)
- Knowledge is more than an intellectual understanding, but a personal, living relationship with God.
- God’s will is His design, purpose, plan, intention for His people.
For Christ to return and reign (Isaiah 14:12-15,24-27)
For all to exercise justice and righteousness (Micah 6:8; Psalm 33:4-5)
For all to exercise honesty and truth (Proverbs 11:1, 12:22)
For all to be saved (1 Timothy 2:3-4; 2 Peter 3:9)
For us to be holy and sanctified (1 Thessalonians 4:3)
For us to continuously rejoice, pray, and be thankful (1 Thessalonians 5:16)
For us to live by a high moral standard (1 Peter 2:15-17)
- Wisdom is the practical outworking of knowledge
- Spiritual understanding comes through the discernment given by the Holy Spirit.
“walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (v.10)
- Walking worthy is to live in a manner that reflects what God has done for you and in you. (Ephesians 4:1-6)
Lowliness (humility) and gentleness
Longsuffering (patience) and forbearance
Love – the same love as Christ
Unity – like minded, one accord, one mind, one spirit, one mind, complete harmony of purpose
Peaceful
- The quality of the fruit is based on the quality of the tree.
- To receive the gospel is to come to know God. To know God is to do His will. To do His will is to know more and more of God.
“strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy” (v.11)
- Strength – place or means of safety, protection, refuge, stronghold (Psalm 46:1)
- Power (kratos) – dominion, strength
- God’s power comes from the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8)
- Endure the task that is set before you with patience and joy
- Joy means emotion called forth from favorable circumstances. It is also an action that we engage in regardless of how a person feels and even in unfavorable circumstances.
“giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saint in the light.” (v.12)
- God has authorized us for a task.
- The inheritance we have through Jesus Christ is eternal life with God. (Ephesians 1:11, Romans 8:16-17)
