Current Teaching Series: A House Built on the Rock

Main Scripture: A Study of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 5-7
(Matthew 7:24-29) “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” 28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, 29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Having a right standing or right relationship with God.

  • Righteousness is not just following a set of rules or rituals, which we will ourselves to do.

  • We receive our righteousness through Jesus Christ.
    • 1 Corinthians 1:29-30

Letter of the Law

Spirit of the Law

You shall not murder
(Exodus 20:13)

You shall not allow anger to lead you to sin
(Psalm 4:4, Ephesians 4:26)

We should not hold on to anything people have said or done to us. This would include speaking verbal insults regarding their worth and intellectual ability to understand.

  • We are called to forgive ourselves (when we are the offender) and others (when we are offended).
  • We are called to reconcile (make right) all contentious situations BEFORE we come before God.
  • Ephesians 4:29-32, James 1:19

ACTION STEPS

  • Don’t allow anger (justified and unjustified) lead you to sin.
  • Reconcile and live in peace with others (Romans 12:18)
