Not Legalism but Christ: Colossians 2:11-23

Christian circumcision is the spiritual removal of sin from the heart.

  • Jewish circumcision – males were required to receive a physical circumcision

Baptism is the symbol of the believer’s association with Christ’s death on the Cross.

  • Baptism is the outward expression of inward faith

Colossians 2:14 (CSB)  “He erased the certification of debt, with its obligations, that was against us and opposed to us, and has taken it away by nailing it to the cross.”

Satan thought that Christ dying on the cross would be his victory because:

  • The people chose Jesus to die on the cross instead of a notorious prisoner (Matthew 27:15-26)
  • Soldiers mocked him by stripping Him of His clothes and placing a crown of thorns on Head because He claimed to be King (Matthew 27:27-31)
  • They placed a sign over his head when He was crucified that said “This is Jesus the King of the Jews” (Matthew 27:37)
  • They mocked Him by saying that He saved others yet cannot save Himself (Matthew 27:42)

At the Cross the veil of the temple was torn and Christ defeated the enemy, took away their weapons, and made a spectacle of them (Matthew 27:51)

  • We should not be controlled by those powers and practices which Christ has already triumphed over.
  • Jesus Christ fulfilled OT law and set us free from its rules and regulations
    • Hebrews 10:10-22
    • Galatians 3:19, 26-29
    • Matthew 23:27-28
    • Romans 6:1-14

Adding to God’s commands might sound wise and religious; however, human commands carry no authority (Colossians 2:22)

  • The world’s decrees and precepts don’t help a person be spiritual – they are of no value in the eternal kingdom of God.
  • Following rules and regulations will always be frustrating. Trying to make sure you follow every single thing can make you miss out on the freedom that Christ has given us on the cross.
  • Keep in mind that following man made rules does not give us the ability to restrain fleshly desires:

Only the love for God and appreciation for all He has done for us in Christ will provoke us to use self-control and empower us to choose to walk in the Spirit rather than the flesh (Joyce Meyer)
